The EOS D30 was Canon's first "home grown" digital SLR. Before that point Canon had a contract with Kodak to rebrand the Kodak 2-megapixel DCS 520 as Canon EOS D2000 and the 6-megapixel DCS 560 as Canon EOS D6000 digital SLRs, which combined Kodak digital backs and Canon camera bodies.

The Canon EOS D30 is a discontinued 3.1-megapixel professional digital single lens reflex camera (DSLR) body, initially announced by Canon on May 17, 2000. It is part of the Canon EOS line of cameras and uses the EF lens mount.

The D30 was aimed at the enthusiast market, and was intended to occupy the gap between the high-end consumer-market Canon PowerShot Pro70, and Canon's first professional digital SLR, the Canon EOS-1D, which was released in November 2001.

The D30 was succeeded by the 6.3-megapixel D60 in 2002.

The EOS D30 is a new popularly priced digital SLR camera with a large-area 3.25 million pixel CMOS Imaging Sensor that accepts all the myriad lenses in the EF series. It is designed for serious amateurs, business and professional photographers. It could be called the “Next Generation Standard Digital SLR”. With high image quality and a multitude of functions, the price is a very reasonable 358,000 yen.

The D30’s imaging sensor is a large 3.25 mega pixel CMOS sensor, with a primary color RGB filter, and a newly developed digital signal processing LSI (Image Engine), to insure high image resolution and excellent color balance. Canon’s unique noise reduction technology produces significant effect for the long time release images such as night scenes. Operational components and controls are from the EOS series so EF lenses, Speedlites and other EOS accessories can be used. The EOS user can use the D30 just as he uses his EOS film cameras. The stainless steel chassis is both light and strong and combined with the high-strength engineering plastic covers gives it a light, strong, rigid body, the smallest in the class (as of August 2000).

Major specifications of the D30 include three selectable focusing points, multiple shooting modes including five easy-to-use Image Select modes, 35-zone Evaluative metering, built-in retractable flash with E-TTL capability, an EOS system first, and continuous photography at approximately 3fps for up to eight frames (Large/Fine). While viewing pictures or performing menu operations, you can return immediately to the shooting mode simply by pressing the shutter button halfway. This is called shooting priority camera design. In addition to allowing immediate playback of images captured, the built-in 1.8″ LCD color monitor on the rear of the camera also displays shutter speed, working aperture, metering mode and other information including a histogram graph of the brightness of a selected image.

The image-recording medium is a CompactFlash (CF) card. Its excellent features include easy expansion of storage capacity, robustness and reliability. When a 16MB type CF card bundled with the EOS D30 is used, approximately 10 frames can be taken (Large/Fine). In addition to the standard 16MB card, 8, 30, 48,64 and 128MB cards are available. D30 is bundled with various application software which accomodates vast customer from sophisticated PC user to the beginners. The EOS D30 is also compatible with CF Type II, so high capacity storage media such as the IBM MicrodriveT can be used. The EOS D30 uses a high-capacity Battery Pack BP-511 (rechargeable lithium-ion battery) to provide stable operation for approximately 540 exposures (fully charged battery and 50% flash use). The Battery Grip BG-ED3 (sold separately) can accommodate two BP-511 Battery Packs to further extend the camera’s shooting capacity.

The eye-level viewfinder uses a roof mirror, making this camera the world’s smallest and lightest 35mm AF SLR when it was launched.

The built-in flash is controlled with TTL autoflash metering. Other features include One-Shot AF, AI Servo AF, shutter speed-priority AE, aperture-priority AE, four Programmed Image Control modes, and metered manual. The world’s smallest AF SLR body is thus packed with features.

With the prewind system, the entire roll is first wound onto the take-up spool. Then each time a picture is taken, the exposed frame rewinds into the cartridge. With its easy operation and friendly name of “Kiss,” the camera became a major hit among young mothers and family snapshooters. It maintained top market share for an extended period.

Canon EOS 5 (1992)

  • Alt

The EOS 5 is the world’s first 35mm SLR camera with Eye Controlled Focus. The camera has five focusing points (||+||). You just look at the desired focusing point to select it and the camera autofocuses at that point. It was a dream feature. A focusing point can also be selected manually.

Other outstanding features include silent operation, 16-zone evaluative metering linked to the five focusing points, 3.5% spot metering at center, centerweighted averaging metering, shutter speed-priority AE, aperture-priority AE, Intelligent program AE, depth-of-field AE, Programmed Image Control modes, and metered manual.

The Canon EOS 5 (sold as the EOS A2 and A2e in the USA) is a semi-professional autofocus, autoexposure 35 mm SLR film camera. It was sold from November 1992 onwards, and was replaced in late 1998 by the Canon EOS 3. As part of the EOS line of cameras, the 5/A2/A2e utilized Canon's EF bayonet lens mount, first introduced in 1987.

The 5/A2/A2e featured a built-in zoom flash, AF assist light, fast motor drives and several pre-set autoexposure modes. Although marketed towards the "prosumer" user, the 5/A2/A2e were popular among professional photographers. The camera was powered by a 6 volt lithium 2CR5 battery, or, with the optional Canon BP-5 Battery Pack, could be powered by D batteries attached to the belt of the user. The Canon VG-10 Vertical Grip added a shutter release, control wheel, AE Lock button and Focus Point Selection button to the bottom of the camera for portrait orientation use, but did not add AA batteries as a power source.

The camera had many operational modes available, selected by the dial on the left-hand side of the camera. These modes selected whether the exposure settings were set automatically, semiautomatically or fully manually. This dial also doubled as an on/off switch.

The Canon EOS 5/A2/A2e had three built-in metering modes; Evaluative, center-weight average and spot. These were user-selectable by means of a button on the back of the camera and the command dial.

The EOS 5/A2e featured eye-controlled focusing, which allowed the user to select from one of five focus points by looking at it through the viewfinder as well as activating depth-of-field preview by looking at a sixth point marked in the top-left corner of the viewfinder. At the time, this feature was unique to Canon. The A2 had the same five focus points, but they could only be selected manually. Although the EOS 5 had an optional vertical grip, the VG-10, the eye-controlled focussing feature only worked when the camera was held in horizontal orientation.

The 5/A2/A2e has two dials to control exposure, one over the shutter button and one on the back of the camera. The dial above the shutter button will adjust the shutter speed in shutter priority TV/Time value mode, but in aperture priority Av/Aperture value mode this same dial will adjust the lens aperture. In full manual mode, the dial above the shutter reverts to adjusting the shutter speed, and the back dial controls the aperture.

At the time of the camera's production, there was a U.S. patent on the use of a digital scale to show under- or over-exposure in a metered-manual SLR. Canon did not want to pay the patent holder, and therefore omitted the -2/+2 (in half-stops) scale in the A2/A2e, leaving just an over or under indication. The European/Japanese market EOS 5 had the scale and on account of this many American photographers preferred the imported model. This is a firmware difference only, and there is at least one third-party firm which will install EOS 5 firmware on an A2/A2e, thereby adding this scale.

The Canon EOS 650 is a 35 mm single-lens reflex camera. It was introduced on 2 March 1987, Canon's 50th anniversary, and discontinued in February 1989. It was the first camera in Canon's new EOS series, which was designed from scratch to support autofocus lenses. The EOS system features the new EF lens mount, which uses electrical signals to communicate between the camera and the lens.[4] Focusing and aperture control are performed by electric motors mounted in the lens body. The EF mount is still used on Canon SLRs, including digital models. Canon's previous FD mount lenses are incompatible with EOS bodies.

Canon's first EOS camera had the latest technologies, including a microprocessor and a Canon-developed BASIS sensor for high-precision AF. Canon claimed incomparable autofocusing for the EOS 650. A range of high-precision Ultrasonic Motor (USM) EF autofocus lenses were also developed successfully for the 650.

An EOS 650 was used in 1992 to take the first photographic image that was uploaded on the World Wide Web, a picture of the band Les Horribles Cernettes.[5]

The EOS 5D Mark III DSLR was announced on the 25th anniversary of the announcement of the EOS 650.

The more advanced EOS 620 followed in May 1987, and the EOS 630/600 in March 1989. The 620 was equipped with multiple exposure and auto-bracketing capability, and a higher flash sync speed of 1/250 and shutter speed of 1/4000. The 630 had interchangeable viewing screens and faster autofocus, and was capable of faster film transport at 5 frames per second over the 650's 3 fps.

Production of the EOS series began in what was then Canon’s Fukushima plant and now takes place at a variety of locations—including Taiwan, Miyazaki, Nagasaki and Oita Canon—where production is under high-product quality management.

Canon EOS 100D (2013)

  • Alt

The Canon EOS 100D, known as the EOS Rebel SL1 in the Americas and EOS Kiss X7 in Japan, is an 18.0-megapixel digital single-lens reflex camera announced by Canon on 21 March 2013.[1] It has been described as the "world's smallest and lightest DSLR camera", either currently in production or in the APS-C format. Canon uses a smaller version of the APS-C sensor format than some other manufacturers including Nikon, Pentax, and Sony, with a crop factor of 1.6 rather than 1.5. It weighs 407 grams including battery and memory card.

The successor of the EOS 100D is the EOS 200D.

Measuring approximately 116.8 (w) x 90.7 (h) x 69.4 mm (d) and weighing only around 370 grams*1, the EOS 100D realizes reductions of approximately 25% in volume and 28% in weight compared with the EOS Kiss X6i, released in June 2012. Despite its compact, lightweight body, made possible through the downsizing of such components as the shutter unit and CMOS package, the diminutive camera’s APS-C-size approximately 18.0-megapixel CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5 image processor combine for exceptional image quality and a high-speed continuous shooting speed of approximately 4 frames per second. Additionally, offering a maximum standard ISO of 12800*2 (expandable to ISO 25600), the EOS 100D enables the capture of images with reduced noise and image blur, even in low-light conditions and when shooting a moving subject.

When capturing images in Live View mode or shooting movies, the EOS 100D newly developed Hybrid CMOS AF II combines high-precision contrast AF and high-speed phase-detection AF, the latter made possible by the camera’s CMOS sensor, to enable high-performance AF across approximately 80% vertically and horizontally of the image-display area. By offering a larger focus area than the earlier model, users can realize improved focusing performance and compose shots with greater flexibility.

The EOS 100D includes three all-new family-oriented scene modes—Kids, Food and Candlelight—which, added to the previous HDR Backlight Control, Night Portrait and Handheld Night Scene, bring the total number of special-scene shooting modes to six. The Kids mode lets users capture blur-free images of even the most active of children while ensuring healthy skin tones. The Food mode makes possible bright, vivid, visually savory images. And the Candlelight mode enables the capture of images that preserve the ambiance of scenes illuminated by candlelight alone, such as the candles on a birthday cake.

The Canon EOS R5 is a full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera officially announced by Canon on July 9, 2020 alongside the lower-resolution EOS R6 and various new RF mount lenses. The EOS R5 is the flagship camera body in Canon’s mirrorless line. While it is not a direct successor to any of the Canon's previous mirrorless cameras, it does have clear improvements and advantages over other models.

The camera is available as body only, or with the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens.

Overheating issues

Shortly after the EOS R5's initial announcement, concerns arose about issues of overheating while recording video, especially 8K video, after short periods of time. In response to users' complaints, Canon issued a media alert addressing these overheating issues, including how long it will take for the camera to overheat at each resolution, why a fan was not included, and how users can prevent the camera from overheating. According to Canon's reported data, the EOS R5 will begin to overheat after recording for just 20 minutes at 8K resolution. A fan was not included to preserve its compact size. Users can delay overheating by toggling on "Overheat Control" in settings, which will adjust resolution and frame rate automatically to prevent overheating. Although Canon offered this explanation, users have continued to complain.

Other testers, however, discovered continuous shooting is possible for up to four hours in 4KHQ mode with an external recorder if no memory cards are inserted, the screen is off, and a dummy battery is used. With an actual battery, again overheating can be avoided for the life of the charge of the battery, about an hour 45 minutes.
